Distory Then and Now   |   Branding, Website Design and Build

Currently engaged in design and development for a website following visual identity development for the DiStory project - an evolving project comprised of institutional survivors, self-advocates, and researchers who, through inclusive collaboration and storytelling, explore a path toward disability justice for those labeled/with intellectual disabilities. The current site is a content summary which will be expanded as project resources are developed by the stakeholders.

Building the logo: In developing the visual identity for this initiative, discussions with the client yielded a number of themes that they wished to convey with the logo:

  • Survival/Strength
  • (overcoming) Struggle/Violence
  • Finding a way forward, or looking to the future

As the initiative was driven by lived-experience stories related by community members, having a sense of "narrative/story" also factored into development, as were the three main tenets surrounding the core ethos of Disability Justice as related by the client are “Change,” “Education” and “Collaboration.”

Varying colours capture diversity. The use of dark red in the element and the logo tagline is subtle a nod to survived violence. The round element has lines that converge on a point at the top of the circle. This forms a shape that suggest a path or road into the distance, or a way out of a “dark tunnel” (a way forward). The converging lines can also suggest multiple paths coming together toward a common goal (collaboration).

A roadway could also very loosely suggest narrative (stories). Choosing yellow to colour the central path element was deliberate as it provides the contrast of light in darkness (education).

Also critical to the client was the accessibility of the logo. While text that is part of the a logotype has no contrast requirement as per the WCAG 2.1 Guidelines, we opted to design with colours for the wordmark that meet the WCAG 2.1 AAA Level contrast ratio recommendation of at least 7:1.
